Paris Hilton has been arrested in South Africa for allegedly smoking marijuana during a football match Friday. Paris arrived in the host nation of South Africa via private jet on Thursday and was arrested on Friday for smoking marijuana at a football stadium, according to police reports.
She was escorted to the nearby Mount Road Police Station in the seaside town of Port Elizabeth at around 8pm after the match, according to a South African newspaper.
Later that day, the charges against her were dismissed by a local judge. The procedure is a familiar one South Africa where marijuana, or ‘daga’ as it is locally known, is illegal officially but tolerated in practice.
The smoking of marijuana and cultivation of the plant in a private residence is generally accepted as legal while the police usually only arrest those smoking the substance in an overtly public manner.
The growing of marijuana for trade and the actual dealing of the drug are two of the only offences that carry any real legal weight. Paris has been enjoying South Africa since she arrived Thursday, twittering after the Brazil-Netherlands match, “Had so much fun at the game today. What a match! I love South Africa”.
